Instructions: Paper Part I: Choosing an Image

Your museum assignment will be completed in three parts throughout the semester:

                        Part I: Proposal

                        Part II: Outline

                        Part III: Final Paper

These instructions are specifically for Part I of your assignment.  Instructions for Parts II and III are forthcoming.

You must attend the first museum trip on Sunday, March 16th at 2pm.  You will make a second trip in a few weeks.   At the museum, you will be sent to a specific set of galleries to choose your image (Galleries 154, 155, and 158).  Please choose wisely, as you cannot change your image once you have turned in your proposal.  I will be there to help you decide if you are conflicted over several images.

After choosing your work of art, you should take some time to note the name of the artist, the work, the date, and the material from which it is made.  You should also take some time to look at the image and think about how the artist might have created it.  Your paper proposal will be an essay no more than one typed page in length that identifies and discusses the following ideas:

-          Artist’s name

-          Name of artwork

-          Date

-          Why you chose this specific painting

o   Please explain what drew you to this particular image and why you wanted to write about it.

You must turn the proposal in on Monday, March 24th, regardless of whether you attended the trip with the class or not.  The proposal must be typed and double spaced.

Instructions: Outline and Final Paper

The second museum trip will take place on your own (www.philamuseum.org).  This trip is particularly important in that it is an opportunity for you to view the work of art that you chose with the knowledge that you have accumulated during the semester thus far.  It is this knowledge and reevaluation of the work that will be the focus of your outline and final paper.  The outline will be due Friday, April 11th.

  • Your outline should follow the standard format that was discussed in class.  Remember, the more thorough your outline, the easier the final paper will be to write.

  • Don’t forget to include the description of your work from the proposal you submitted

  • Beyond the proposal you will further your analysis of the work. This analysis MUST  include the following concepts:

    • an analysis of the use of Visual Elements as covered in Chapter 4

      • (Make sure you review these concepts, and their subcategories, as they apply to your particular work of art)

    • an analysis of the use of Principles of Design as covered in Chapter 5

      • (Review as necessary)

  • Form a concise argument.  Why does your painting belong in a museum? Why is it good art?

    • This is not mere opinion; it should be an informed judgment of the object based on the two parts above.
